Def Leppard Won the Night
We missed all of Foreigner, sadly, due to the massive backup at all entrances for security, who were literally examining every key on keyrings for some reason. Great lineup. After some technical issues at the start, they finally got in and to our seats about 20 minutes before Def Leppard was due to go on. It took forever. They put on a FABULOUS show. Sounded great, extreme energy, terrific use of the video screens, perfect use of lasers. It felt modern and retro and nostalgic all at once. I would have been happy for them to keep playing all night. I saw them in concert 4 or 5 times back in "the day" and loved each show. Protomartyr, the headliners, had to make way for. I wasn't expecting them to replicate that feeling, what with age and a new singer, but I expected a much better show than we got. People were just sitting there, where they had been dancing and jumping for Def Leppard. The singer DOES sound eerily like Steve Perry, so the songs and sound were on-point, but he has no showmanship, so he had trouble getting the crowd into it. And then almost every song had a Neil Shon guitar solo. Could have been called "An Evening with Neil Shon". Oh - and the ending of the show...maybe there was a hard-stop time, but they played Don't Stop Believin', said "thank you, good night!" and were gone. Nobody was sure if there would be an encore or not. The drum solo was incredible, though - probably the best part of their set. And then the lights came up and everyone left.
